Welcoming immigrants to Portland, Maine
Attorney Terry Garmey’s arms might be sore, but that’s not going to stop him from moving more furniture that people have donated for the local immigrant community. Terry and his wife Mandy are active volunteers for the Welcoming Immigrants Network (WIN) of Greater Portland. The interfaith group aims to empower new residents with information, tools and resources to “strengthen our greater community into a vibrant, self-sustaining whole.” A big part of the effort is a furniture center that accepts donations and supplies furniture to individuals and families.
Attorney Gary Goldberg is also involved. He sits on the board for the center, formally known as Furniture Friends.
Support for newcomers to Maine is part of the character of the firm Terry Garmey & Associates . Attorney David Kreisler is a member of the pro bono panel for the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project, a nonprofit organization based in Portland. David donates his time to handle asylum cases for low-income immigrants and refugees.
